Solar Power and the Ethos of Voluntourism
Last semester, I was part of UNC's "Magazine Writing and Editing" class within the journalism school. Within that class, the students come up with an idea for a magazine, pitch it to a committee then proceed to actually make the magazine. In conjunction with the "Magazine Design" class, we produce both a print version as well as an iPad version of this magazine. We decided to launch a niche magazine devoted to the growing social movement of "voluntourism," or service-minded travel. We called it True North (my idea... pretty proud of that) and I was one of the three editors charged with making it a reality. In addition to being one of the editors, I also produced three features for the magazine: "Letters to the Editor," an in-depth feature story and an "Expert Q & A" where I was more of a moderator.
You can download the iPad app here to check out the entire publication. For those of you that don't have iPads, I took screenshots of each page of my feature article that you can see below. You don't get all the fancy navigation, but you can still see the actual writing. I also included some shots of the opening title sequence if you were to launch the magazine on an iPad.
